MAN IN BLACK

Officer Keri-Ann Leigh-ton reported an alarm going off at 1884 Elmwood Ave. around 2:55 a.m. on Oct. 14 at the Columbus Door Co. She said she arrived to find a bicycle outside a pried-open window and a second officer was dispatched to the scene before others arrived to set up a perimeter around the building. She said a worker with a key arrived and they did a preliminary search inside but didn’t find anyone. She said the owner was called and arrived within 10 minutes to turn on all the lights in the building. She said she and several other officers searched again and this time Sgt. Joel Thomas found a man in a black ski mask, dressed in black down to his gloves, behind and between stacks of building supplies. He told the man to come up with his hands showing and he complied. She said they found a pocketknife, a screwdriver and a box cutter on him. The owner told police the man looked familiar to him and he then remembered that he had worked for an independent contractor who did some work at the company on two occasions. He identified the suspect as Keith Staley, 51, of 415 Friendship St., Providence. He also told police there were video cameras inside and outside the building and he would retrieve that video and give it to police the next day. Staley was charged with breaking and entering and possession of burglary tools. Over 20 court records show charges dating back to 1988 through 2011 before this latest arrest.
