SUSPICIOUS

Officer Matthew Moretti reported he was dispatched to a home on Northridge Avenue on Oct. 17 for a suspicious man. A 91-year-old woman there described a light-skinned black male who came to her door around 4:20 p.m. and told her she had trees with branches hanging over her neighbor’s property and her neighbor hired him to cut the trees. She said he asked her to walk with him into the back yard so he could show her the trees he needed to cut. She said he was very persistent and was at the door for about five minutes before she came out to see what he was talking about. She said they walked to the corner where he grabbed her arm and continued into the yard. She said she pulled away and went back into the house. She said he was talking with someone on a cell phone as he called after her, asking her where she was going. She said he left the area when she went inside. She said she didn’t see any vehicle or any other person around at the time. Moretti said the woman’s son and daughter were there when he arrived and they told him they checked with her neighbor and learned no one was hired to cut any trees. She described the man as in his early 30s, about 5’11” tall with a slim build. Her children told him they checked with other neighbors and no one reported seeing anyone. The report was forwarded to detectives.

He said he put the bag down and the other guy picked it up and walked out of the store without paying for the concealed stuff, which included the sweatshirt from Macy’s and other items from American Eagle. Edwin Hernandez, 18, of 291 Dudley St. in Providence, was charged with shoplifting and conspiracy, as was the juvenile. Hernandez was released with a summons and the boy was released to his mother.

Officer Stephen Major reported a shoplifter in custody at the JC Penney store on Oct. 21. Loss prevention said they recovered four items worth $201 from Sandra L. Williams, 52, of 5300 Post Road, Warwick. They said she concealed the goods and left the store without paying for them. Major said he arrested the same woman in January for stealing from Nordstrom Rack and knew she was trespassed from Warwick Mall. She was also on probation for that charge. She was charged with felony shoplifting, trespassing and violating her probation. She was later released on $5,000 surety bail.

Officer Michael Walker arrested a Providence woman on Oct. 19 after loss prevention at Macy’s told him she concealed $301.22 worth of clothing and left the store without paying for the goods. Officer Matthew Smith said he responded to an accident at the Mobil gas station on Jefferson Boulevard around 2:25 a.m. on Oct. 9. He said the man standing next to a Lexus sedan with heavy front end damage told him he was trying to get onto Route 95 from Route 37 when he hit a guard rail or another car but was able to get off the highway and pull into the Mobil station. Smith said State Troopers and Warwick Police found evidence that a guardrail had been hit and no other vehicle was involved. He said the driver had alcohol on his breath and appeared to be drunk. He said they stopped the field sobriety test after the driver failed the walk and turn test and said he was too drunk to continue. He said the man failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Carlos A. Alves, 43, of 47 Pell Ave., Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal. Kay said some pills found on Alves were a controlled substance but he was not charged with possession pending his providing a prescription for the medication.
