ANOTHER SCAM

Officer Timothy Kenyon reported being dispatched to 4 Post Road on Oct. 21 to get some details about a phone scam that cost a local woman $260. The 61-year-old woman told Kenyon she got a call from a woman who identified herself as Silvia Gilbert and left a message saying that she was the recipient of a random grant of $10,200. The woman said she called the number and was told by “Gilbert” to purchase a Green Dot Money Pak with $260 on it. She said she bought the card and gave the woman the number of the Money Pak card. She said “Gilbert” then told her she had to call a “Mark Ziegler” with her “confirmation number.” He said she called and was put on hold for about 20 minutes until he came back and said his records showed she did not purchase the Payment Protection Insurance she needed to claim the prize and asked for another Money Pak card for $495 and assured her she would get all the money back with a grant for $10,955. At that point, she told him she wasn’t going to buy another card and he told her he was the “Senior Account Manager for the Federal Account Department of the U.S. Government Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.,” but she refused to buy another card and then asked for her $260 back. He hung up on her. Kenyon said he forwarded the report to detectives.

ONE MORE SCAM

Officer Darren Parrillo reported another scam done to a woman on Rossi Street on Oct. 19. A woman told him a man came to the door around 11 a.m. and said he was from the Tree Company and asked if she saw the notice left on the door that they were coming. She said he then led her out of the house and into the backyard, where the trees were. She said he told her he was waiting for his boss to arrive. She said he apparently had no truck with him and asked questions about her neighbor and if he had her permission to be in the yard. She said one of her neighbors came from across the street and asked the man for some identification. He didn’t have any and he left as her neighbor called the Tree Company and they did not know who he was. She said she went back inside and noticed that envelopes containing cash that were in a bureau drawer were missing and another drawer was missing a 20-point diamond ring and an antique gold watch. The woman told Parrillo at least $1,100 in cash was missing, along with the jewelry, which was worth around $1,500. She told Parrillo she believed that he had an accomplice who went inside the house while she was in the yard, although a laptop and her purse were left untouched. There were no other reports of suspicious behavior in the area. No suspects or other witnesses.

SHOPLIFTING

A Warwick woman was arrested at the Walmart on Post Road on Oct. 27 after loss prevention told police she was recognized by them and they monitored her as she worked her way through the store. They said she selected about 60 different items and concealed them in a tote that she also took from their display. They said they recovered dog treats, make-up, food and other items for a total of $448.92. They said she stole from them on Oct. 19 but was not apprehended at that time. They said they would send a copy of their video surveillance of her to headquarters. Kelli J. Jourdain, 30, of 196 Harmony Ct., Warwick, was later released with a summons for District Court.

Pilderian, 50, of 8 Broom St., Providence, was charged with stealing a pair of shoes, a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans worth a total of $31.19 on Oct. 28, after loss prevention at the Walmart on Post Road provided a picture of the items and a written statement. She was later released with a summons.

PHONE TRACED

A Warwick woman told Officer Michelle Caron her daughter left her $400 iPhone in the dressing room at Savers on Universal Boulevard on Oct. 22 and it was gone when she went back to get it. The woman said the phone had a GPS app and that indicated it was within 100 feet of an address in Cranston. Caron said she called Cranston and asked them to follow up on it and they found no one was home. The phone was entered into NCIC as stolen. The woman told Caron she would press charges when the thief is caught.
