Loss prevention at the Walmart at Rhode Island Mall told police they followed the actions of one man as he worked his way through the store’s electronics department on Dec. 2, selecting several items that he took out of the packaging and concealed in his jacket before leaving the store without paying. Loss prevention said they recovered a mobile phone and several DVDs worth $192.06 from Nathan R. Guidon, 29, of 27 Almy St. in Lincoln. He was later released with a summons for District Court.

Loss prevention at the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall told police Teresa D. Tortolani, 59, of 71 Clubhouse Rd., Coventry, took four items out of the inventory at the store and left the premises without paying for them on Dec. 2. They said the goods were worth $147.95. She was released with a summons for shoplifting.

On Nov. 26 loss prevention at JC Penney told police that Naomi C. Zaza, 18, of 59 Fairway Dr., Cranston, concealed seven items from their store that she concealed before she left the store without paying the $160.95 they were worth. She was later released with a summons.

Margaret A. Ayers, 63, of 132 Union Ave., Warwick, was charged with shoplifting at Macy’s in Warwick Mall on Nov. 21. Loss prevention said she concealed two sweaters and a scarf in a shopping bag and was stopped by loss prevention as she attempted to leave the mall without paying for the goods. The goods were worth $155. She was later released with a summons.

Two Johnston women were charged with shoplifting at JC Penney on Nov. 22. Loss prevention told police the women were seen taking books and clothing items into the dressing rooms and emerging with none of the goods visible. A quick check of the stalls showed there was nothing left in there. Both women were stopped as they attempted to leave. Jennifer Perez, 20, of 240 George Waterman Rd., Johnston, was charged with stealing $99.99 worth of clothing. Melanie Perez, 19, of the same address, was charged with stealing $292.99 worth of clothing. They were later released with summonses.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Warwick Police responded to a single car and telephone pole accident in the area of 770 East Ave. around 12 a.m. on Dec. 6. The Traffic Division Accident Reconstruction Team is investigated the accident and charged the operator of the car with DUI, refusal, driving on a suspended license and laned roadway violations. He was identified as Christian Bourdon, 27, from Central St., West Warwick. The passenger was identified as Thomas Caparco, 39, of Chapmans Ave. in Warwick. Both Bourdon and Caparco were transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Warwick Fire Rescue with serious injuries and were still listed in serious condition as of yesterday. The preliminary investigation disclosed that the vehicle was traveling westbound on East Avenue, approaching the East Avenue Bridge, when it failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the centerline and struck the telephone pole. Additional charges to include felony driving while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury may be filed against Bourdon pending toxicology results. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information related to the crash is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at 468-4293.

Officer Randy Francis reported stopping a car after he clocked it at 60 miles per hour on Warwick Avenue around 12:45 a.m. on Nov. 22. He said he watched the car go from lane to lane as he was catching up with it and before it went into the lot at Meadowbrook Plaza. He said the driver told him he was going home from his brother’s house and from Lupo’s nightclub in Providence. He said he smelled of alcohol and admitted he had “several” drinks earlier. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. He said an inventory search turned up a small bag of green leafy stuff that looked like marijuana. Bradley W. Mattes, 45, of 624 Church Ave., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal and possession of marijuana.

Officer Nicholas DiNardo reported a multi-car accident on the Airport Connector around 10 p.m. on Nov. 20. He said the driver of one of the cars appeared to be intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said he asked her about injuries and she refused medical treatment. He said she failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where she refused a breath test. Amy Arsenault, 28, of 100 Elena St., Cranston, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Joseph Hopkins reported a car swerving down Narragansett Parkway around 1:40 a.m. with no headlights on Nov. 27. He said he pulled it over near General Hawkins Avenue and recognized her from prior contacts. He said he smelled of alcohol and couldn’t remember where she was coming from. He said she failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. He said she began to act like she was having breathing problems and she as transported to Kent Hospital after she denied she was driving and refused to take the breath test. Hopkins said she was yelling and screaming for most of her time at the hospital and was held for detox but was not treated for any breath disorder because the couldn’t find one. Lori L. Beaune, 39, of 491 Fair St., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal, second offense, and not using headlamps when required.

Officer Charles Austin reported a spinout on Route 37 around 2:45 a.m. on Nov. 22. A car hit a guardrail but the driver and his passenger both declined medical treatment. He said the man smelled of alcohol and was given a field sobriety test. He said Stephen Russo, 46, of 520 Kenyon Ave., Pawtucket, took a breath test at headquarters and registered a .116 and a .165 blood alcohol content. He was charged with DUI and later released with a summons.

ONE CHARGE DOWN

Officer Jeremy Smith reported being dispatched to the Mizu restaurant on Warwick Avenue around 12 a.m. on Nov. 29 for a near accident involving a suspected drunk driver. The driver described the near accident for Smith but he could not find the suspect vehicle until a few minutes later when he called to say the car was at the 7-Eleven store at 2080 Warwick Ave. Smith said he saw the driver come out of the store and the driver denied he was driving but quickly gave up that story and admitted he had been driving. He said the man claimed he was sober, but Paul S. Jackson, 30, of 469 Church Ave., Warwick, did not act that way and failed a field sobriety test before he was taken to headquarters and charged with shoplifting because of the 7-Eleven items found in the car, tire gauges, batteries and a radio-controlled helicopter worth a total of $72.20. He was not charged with DUI because Smith had not actually seen him drive.

    I find it concerning that mature women and men approx. aged 60 +/- are shoplifting items such as sweaters, colognes, watches and other oddities over the months of reading the Log. Not that shoplifting is age related but I would like to believe at a certain point in our life we recognize this is bad behavior and extremely embarrassing for ourselves and probably families.
