SHOPLIFTING

On Dec. 9, loss prevention at JC Penney in Warwick Mall told police they saw a man take seven items into a dressing room and emerge with none. They said they checked the booth and found five of the seven items there. They recovered a Buffalo Cardigan and a Legacy poplin top from Benjamin M. Wright Hoyt, 19, of 415 Oakwoods Dr., Wakefield, that were worth a total of $108. He was released with a summons.

A Cranston woman was charged with felony shoplifting on Dec. 7 after loss prevention at TJ Maxx on Bald Hill Road told police she and the man she was with concealed sunglasses, cologne, perfumes and sweaters by covering them with a jacket in the shopping carriage. According to the police report, they were stopped outside and $520.86 worth of goods was recovered. Colleen A. Marzullo, 48, of 49 Francis St. in Cranston, and Matthew B. Silva, 26, of 23 Church St., West Warwick, were charged with shoplifting and conspiracy.

Three Fall River residents were arrested at Macy’s in Warwick Mall on Dec. 9 and charged with shoplifting and conspiracy. Loss prevention at Macy’s told police they called in a shoplifting in progress because the subjects were known shoplifters but they had fled the store and the parking lot by the time police arrived. Their SUV was stopped on West Natick Road and the three were taken into custody. Loss prevention told police they saw the two women inside the store as they gathered up merchandise and then run out of the store with armloads of merchandise and jumped into an SUV, which was the one they stopped. Jamie Nobles, 37, of 539 4th St., and Monique Couto, 25, of 12 18th St., were charged with shoplifting. The driver of the SUV, Matthew McCarty, 30, also of 12 18th St., admitted he knew what the women were doing and was also charged with shoplifting and conspiracy.

LARCENIES

Police took a report of a pickup left on its axles at the Villa Del Rio Apartments and stripped of its wheels and tires on Nov. 30. The owner told police he thought the truck looked strange when he approached it and then realized that the wheels and tires had been removed. Usually, a car is left on dairy crates after it has been jacked up, but police said they apparently just used a jack to raise the truck, remove the wheels and then lower the car to the ground, one wheel at a time. No witnesses or suspects. The wheels were worth $2,000.

A Florida woman who was staying at the Hilton Garden Inn on Thurber Street over Dec. 12 told police she came out that morning around 7:45 and found that the tires and rims of her rented Nissan Maxima, worth $4,000, were missing. No suspects or witnesses.

A man who lives on Harrington Avenue called police on Nov. 29 to report that someone had stolen both license plates off the car and keyed both sides of his 2010 Honda Accord sometime overnight. No suspects or witnesses.

A 19-year-old Warwick man told police he was watching a movie at the Showcase Cinema at Warwick Mall on Nov. 26 when someone broke the window on his parked car. He said he found the front passenger window smashed but a check indicated that nothing was taken from the car. No witnesses or suspects.

A woman who lives on Wellspring Drive told police she had no idea who or why someone left a large dent on the rear passenger door of her rented car on Nov. 26. Police said they found a large rock on the ground beside the car that was probably used to dent the 2013 Toyota Corolla.

A guest at the Holiday Inn Express on Jefferson Boulevard told police someone smashed the window of his car overnight on Dec. 3 and stole his $200 iPhone and his alien resident green card. No witnesses or suspects.

A resident of the Village Green Condominiums on Post Road told police she came out of her apartment the morning of Dec. 3 and noticed that her 2013 VW Golf was missing from its usual parking space. She said she probably left it unlocked but did not leave the keys inside. No witnesses.

DUI OR REFUSAL

Officer Randy Francis reported seeing a driver operate erratically at a high rate of speed on the Airport Connector around 12:35 a.m. on Dec. 1. He said he pulled the SUV over on Post Road and noticed the man smelled of alcohol and mumbled. He said he used a Rhode Island ID card instead of a license because his license was suspended. He said he gave the man a field sobriety test and the man failed it. Hector J. Garcia, 35, of 7 Winslow Ave., Warwick, was taken to headquarters, where he refused a breath test. He was charged with laned roadway violations, driving on a suspended license, DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Christopher Lo reported he got a call about a possible drunk driver on the Airport Connector around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 4. He said he caught up with the car on Airport Road and saw it going slower than the limit and swerving from lane to lane before he pulled it over. He said the driver appeared to be under the influence and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where he registered a .177 and a .166 blood alcohol content. Bernard J. Pokraka, 60, of 102 Namquid Dr., Warwick, was issued a ticket for laned roadway violations and DUI and later released to a sober adult.

VICTIM NAMED

The Warwick Police responded to a car and pedestrian accident in the area of 800 West Shore Road around 4 p.m. on Dec. 10. The Traffic Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. The accident involved one vehicle and a pedestrian, John Lacki, 64, from Spadina Avenue, Warwick. Lacki was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries but was described as being in good condition on Saturday.

The initial report said Lacki was crossing West Shore Road in a crosswalk near the Conimicut Post Office when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on West Shore Road.  The vehicle was being operated by Joseph Woods, 18, from Bellman Avenue, Warwick, who was alone in the vehicle. Witnesses indicated that Woods may not have had his lights on at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the accident.

The investigation is ongoing, but criminal charges are not likely and it does not appear alcohol was involved. Any person with information or who may have witnessed the accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at 468-4200.
