DROOLING

THIEF

Officer Tomas Bogusz reports tires and rims worth a total of $5,000 were missing from a 21013 Toyota Avalon that was parked at 1170 Warwick Neck Ave. on Dec. 30. The owner said she returned to her vehicle to find it propped up on cement blocks. Bogusz said there was a small wet spot near the driver’s side front wheel that, upon closer inspection, appeared to be saliva. A detective was called to the scene to process the saliva for DNA and the lug nuts for fingerprints.

TIRES

AND RIMS

Officer Bogusz had a similar report on Dec. 29, when D & H Auto Body on Elmwood Avenue reported a 2013 Honda Accord was missing its wheels and tires. They said they owned the car and the wheels were on it the day before. There were no suspects or witnesses.

Officer Gilda Fortier reports four more missing wheels from the Twin Oaks Condominiums on West Shore Road on Dec. 31. A 2014 Honda CRV was left up on plastic milk crates. The tires and rims were worth $1,800. There were no suspects. A neighbor reported seeing a man he did not recognize come into the lot the night before, but said that he left after being asked what he was doing there and dismissively saying something. The neighbor gave Fortier the plate number, and she forwarded the report to detectives.

Officer Stephen Major reports more rims and tires stolen from a 2013 Accord that was parked on Cedar Pond Drive on Dec. 24. The owner told Major she parked the car the night before and returned to find that some had taken all the wheels and left the car up on blocks. There were no witnesses or suspects.

Svetlana G. Pustylnik, 62, of 98 Wollaston St. in Cranston, was arrested at the JC Penney store in the Warwick Mall on Jan. 3 after loss prevention caught her taking a JC Penney bag out from behind a counter and put it in her pocket to use in another part of the store, where she allegedly concealed five items in the bag before walking out without paying. The store gave police video of the incident. Pustylnik was later released with a summons.

Loss prevention at Sears in the Rhode Island Mall told police on Jan. 2 they saw Daniel S. Bigelow, 32, of 20 Wisteria Drive in Coventry, remove a $64.95 watch from its packaging and conceal it in his pocket before leaving without paying for it. He was processed at headquarters and later released with a summons.

DUI AND

REFUSAL

Officer Brian Chianese was dispatched to a single-car accident inside City Park around 9:25 p.m. on Dec. 23. He said he and another officer saw the driver and passenger were talking when they arrived and the female was saying she was driving the car when it rolled over, but another officer said he believed the man was driving because he had a mark on his face where the airbag struck him and the driver’s seat was pushed back so far that the woman could not have reached the pedals of the pickup truck.

Chainese said the woman told the officers she didn’t want to drive in the park because it was too dark for her, and her friend got behind the wheel. She told the officers she realized the man had more than the one beer he was carrying as they drove through the park, and actually had six before she picked him up. She said they made a few loops around the park and were heading out of the park when the truck flipped over. The woman told the officers the man asked her to tell the police she was driving and she did, but police questioning prompted her to tell the truth. She said she lied because she didn’t want the man to get into trouble.

Chianese said it appeared that the truck struck a post and a rock that caused to roll onto its side. Officer Jason Cooke administered a field sobriety test, which Shane Pugsley, 26, of 20 Queen St. in Warwick, reportedly failed. He was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with DUI, second offense, refusal, first offense, and driving with a suspended license. He was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Kevin McGuire reports a hit and run accident on Buttonwoods Avenue on Dec. 28. The victim told police the driver was in a blue or black Acura possibly bearing a Massachusetts plate. McGuire said he was on West Shore Road near Warwick Neck Avenue when he saw a blue Acura that fit the description and saw it weave across the lanes several times before he pulled it over. He said the driver appeared to be unsteady on his feet and had to lean on the car. The officer said there was a gash above the driver’s eye, and the man reportedly said he was punched when he was asked about it.

McGuire said he smelled of alcohol and he noticed that the car had scratches and scuffs consistent with an accident. He said all the occupants of the car appeared to be drunk and no one knew where they were. He said witnesses arrived at the scene and identified the driver as the hit and run driver. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and reportedly said, “That’s it. I’m not doing anymore. Do whatever you have to do but I’m done.”

McGuire said he asked the man again why he left the scene of the accident, and the driver reportedly said, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” The driver was then taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test.

Peter J. Kenney, 23, of 179 Village St. in Medway, Mass., was charged with DUI, refusal, leaving the scene of and accident and laned roadway violations.

Officer Rose Michel reports an accident on Quaker Lane around 1:35 a.m. on Dec. 24.A car had been rear-ended near 510 Quaker Lane and the driver of the car that did it was sitting on the curb.

Michel said she asked the driver if he needed medical attention and when he said no, she asked him to take a field sobriety test. She said she asked him three times to keep his head still and follow an object with his eyes, and all three times he did not do so after saying he would. Moving on, the officer reports the man failed to finish the walk and turn and refused to finish the one-leg stand.

The driver was taken to headquarters and then to Kent Hospital, where he reportedly refused to take a blood test and refused to sign anything until he was told he would not be released until he signed it. He was left at the hospital and was not photographed or fingerprinted, which would have to be done before he went to court.

Brandon J. Smith, 26, of 60 Boston St. in Coventry, was charged with DUI, refusal, laned roadway violations, not maintaining proper space between vehicles, driving too fast for conditions and having no evidence of insurance.
