JEWELS

HEISTED

A jewelry-making company on Jefferson Boulevard called police on Jan. 6 to report that someone had taken a box of costume jewelry from a loading dock that morning. Company personnel showed police video of a man driving a light-colored Chevy Trailblazer stopping at the dock, getting out and picking up a box containing 279 pieces of identical jewelry worth $4 each and then driving off with it. Police were told the man was not from the delivery service the company had called to pick the jewelry up. The video showed a gray-haired male with a receding hairline. Officer Dale Drowne reported he got a copy of the video and forwarded it and the report to detectives. The total value was $1,116.

He was on probation for felony shoplifting last year and had over 30 prior convictions for shoplifting, assault and “maintaining a common nuisance.” He was remanded to the ACI.

DUI AND

REFUSAL

Richard DePonte, 49, of 43 Lakecrest Drive in Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 after he was stopped for driving erratically on Warwick Avenue. Officer Jeremy Smith said he clocked the car at 64 mph before he pulled it over near Lakeshore Drive. He said DePonte failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Domestic assault and domestic disorderly conduct were added after he was charged with throwing a drink in the face of his girlfriend when she refused to dance with him at the Ironworks Tavern.

Officer Walter Larson charged a Coventry man with DUI, second offense and refusal, first offense, on Jan. 5 around 6:15 p.m. Larson said he was investigating a three-car accident on Quaker Lane when he saw the driver’s car was missing its front driver’s side wheel. He said the driver smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk and failed a field sobriety test. Police said Shawn Morris, 37, of 31B Phillips Hill Road, refused a formal breath test at police headquarters. He was later released with a summons to a sober adult.

Sgt. Scott Robillard reports he was on patrol when he was dispatched to an accident with injuries near 847 West Shore Road around 10:50 p.m. on Dec. 27. He said a single vehicle struck another parked vehicle and the driver was in the back of the Rescue truck being treated by EMTs. He said she was swearing quite a bit and was so belligerent they put her in restraints for everybody’s safety, including her own. He said she failed a field sobriety test and refused a chemical test at the hospital. Colleen A. He said another man came out of his house and said he saw the same thing and that they thought the driver had been drinking. Chea himself said he could smell alcohol on the driver and he took him aside for a field sobriety test. He said the man failed the test and was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a chemical test, but the green leafy substance found on him tested positive for marijuana. Steven B. Daniels, 57, of 37 Elisha St. in Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal and possession of marijuana. He was held for the bail commissioner.

Officer Nicholas Reay reports he was on patrol around 8:40 p.m. on Dec. 30 when he was dispatched to 1050 Centerville Road for an accident. He said he met with a woman who said she was stopped at a red light when her car was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer. She said she pulled into the lot at 1050 and was hit by the Ford a second time. Reay said he approached the other driver and his vehicle was still running with the music blaring and he had him shut it off. Reay said the driver claimed the Volkswagen stopped short, causing him to hit it. The officer said he asked the man what happened when he hit it a second time, and the man denied hitting the car on the way into the lot. He said the driver looked drunk and smelled of alcohol. Reay said he asked the man about a cut on the bridge of his nose and the man said it was from the night before, when his dog tripped him and he and he hit his nose on a heating vent. The man also reportedly said he also hurt his shoulder the night before when falling down a flight of stairs. The officer said the man also acknowledged drinking a half-cup of vodka and a light beer before leaving the house.

Reay said the driver decisively failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where he blew a .158 and a .174 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Robert M. Miller, 58, of 1518 Main St. in West Warwick, was charged with DUI, first offense, and failure to maintain a safe interval between vehicles. He was later released with a summons to a sober adult.
