HOT WHEELS

Officer Jeffrey Taranto reported a high-speed chase that started at Gaspee Point and ended up near Pawtuxet Memorial Park around 1:25 a.m. on Jan. 26. Someone on Lane Two called police to report a suspicious vehicle, possibly a Porsche, and a man walking down the street looking at mailboxes. He said he was on his way there when he heard another officer say he attempted to stop the car and it took off down Miantonomo Drive. Taranto said he then saw the car speeding by and followed it onto Spring Green Drive and blow through a stop sign. He said he called in the plate number and followed the car onto Narragansett Parkway and then onto Spring Green again and then Lakeside as it swerved all over the road because of the snow and ice and high speed. He said it went down Colgate and then onto Columbia Avenue, where it jumped the snow bank at the dead end and hit a tree and a fire pit in a yard. The female passenger was taken out of the car and then the driver was pulled out the passenger side door. He said the driver was finally handcuffed after a brief struggle. He said the driver became apologetic and said he was “[Expletive] up on acid.” He said they discovered more damage that was done in the chase later.

He said the driver was put in a cell while they did the paperwork for the incident, but he complained he couldn’t breath so they took him to Kent Hospital. Officer Jeremy Smith said that the driver, identified as James A. Pastore, 32, of 151 Hope Rd., Cranston, said he had five hits of LSD in his pocket when he was first stopped but then swallowed them as he was trying to speed away. Sgt. John McAniff reported that the $70,000 car was stolen out of Massachusetts. Pastore was charged with reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, laned roadway violations, running stop signs, not using turn signals, possession of a controlled substance for one remaining dose of LSD they found on him, and possession of stolen property and left in the custody of the medical staff. His passenger, Amy Duggan, 23, of 178 High St., Andover, Mass., was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
