A woman is facing charges after Cranston police shut down a massage parlor suspected of conducting illegal massages and prostitution.
The investigation into Sun Massage, located at 96 Rolfe Square, began after police received information regarding the alleged illegal activities occurring at the business, according to a press release from Chief of Police Col. Michael J. Winquist.
Detectives found that Li Sun had filed an application to conduct massages at the site, but had failed to appear before the city’s Safety Services and Licensing Committee as required.
Additionally, police discovered ads for full body massages on the website Backpage.com. The ads featured “scantily-clad Asian women” and stated, “Make you leave with a big smile,” according to the chief.
An undercover detective was subsequently sent into Sun Massage and received a massage from a woman identified as Jian Kong, 54, of 83 High School Ave., second floor, in Cranston. After the transaction was complete, detectives entered the established and confirmed she was not a licensed massage therapist. She was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of practicing massage without a license, according to the chief.
Detectives then contacted Li Sun, who was not at the business, and advised her Sun Massage could not open before receiving city approval. She was issued a citation for violating a municipal ordinance requiring licensure to operate a massage therapy establishment.
“We will continue to enforce both state laws and municipal ordinances that govern these businesses,” Winquist said. “I want to thank the pubic for bringing this illegal business to our attention. Tips regarding illicit activity can be submitted anonymously through the Cranston police website.”
