Police continue to seek info about City Park slaying

Posted

Det. Capt. Robert Nelson said yesterday that his detectives are still hoping to hear more from people who know anything about the circumstances surrounding the death of John W. “Jack” Fay Jr., whose body was found in a barrel in City Park about 10:20 a.m. on May 17.

Nelson was reluctant to discuss details of the investigation, as it is ongoing, but he did say that blunt force trauma was the cause of death. He said police have yet to find any credible information about why he was killed. Rumors about motive have ranged from far-fetched to un-substantiated. Although police have not ruled out robbery as a motive, they believe it was unlikely that Fay, who was jogging when he was attacked, was carrying anything of particular value.

Police inquiries into any personal grudges or enemies have been equally inconclusive.

“We are just asking anyone who saw something in the park during that timeframe to tell us what they saw,” said Nelson, “or who they saw, or if they know someone who was in the park at that time.”

Nelson said police have narrowed that timeframe to between 4:30 and 4:45 A.M. on May 16. He said that was based on the time he usually went jogging and forensic data from the medical examiner. Nelson said he and the rest of the Warwick Police have been deeply affected by what appears, so far, to be a tragic turn of fate.

“I can tell you this,” said Nelson. “He didn’t set out to end his day that way.”

Jack Fay, 66, was an Army veteran of Vietnam with a Purple Heart. He was a letter carrier in the Garden City Post Office before he retired. He has lived in Warwick since 1972. His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. this morning from the Thomas and Walter Quinn Funeral Home on Warwick Avenue, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Kevin Church on Sandy Lane and burial with military honors at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.

It was more like am, if it was pm somebody would have witnessed something as there was a violent struggle. As somebody close to this family I beg anyone who heard or saw anything that day, or anyone who has seen anyone with some weird injuries like they were in a fight or has heard someone talk about doing this...PLEASE call the police. He was a good man with children and grandchildren, he volunteered at homeless shelters and loved to run. This was an attack from a stranger who is still out there somewhere. We need closure and all of Warwick and RI should be very careful in secluded areas until this monster is off the streets.

It would have happened May 17th early morning, probably 5-6 am on the Friday from what I know from the family and many other news articles.

Author of this article, please fix this as that is very key to the investigation. Thank you.

The Police often report Fictitious details regarding crime scenes for good reasons. I'd be looking for someone with a history of violence and possibly has had his license revoked. That would be for the case of someone a bit older. There is always the chance it could have been a younger teen, full of testosterone and thrill seeking. There could have been more than one involved. I'd check the local High Schools for kids with any history of fighting or for a recent drop out with same history.
