The Warwick Police responded to a car and bicyclist accident in the area of 850 Bald Hill Road at 6:09 p.m. on July 17. The Traffic Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. The accident involved a 1976 Datsun 280Z, operated by Donald Colapietro, a 23-year-old male from Cranston, and the bicyclist. The bicyclist, identified as Charles Hawkins, 64 years old from North Providence, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Warwick Fire Rescue where he succumbed to his fatal injuries a short time later.

The preliminary investigation disclosed that the vehicle was traveling north on Bald Hill Road in the area of Men’s Warehouse in the left lane when the vehicle collided with the bicyclist, who initially appears to have been walking his bike across the roadway from the eastbound side of Bald Hill Road toward the westbound side. The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and any person with information related to the accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division. It does not appear alcohol played a factor in this crash and is unknown if charges will be filed.

Please contact either Sgt. Earl Read (468-4293) or Officer Farias (468-4343), who has been assigned as the lead investigator.
