Police make arrest in credit card skimming of 125 GCU customers

The Greenwood Credit Union and more than 125 of its customers were the victims of ATM skimming last month. An unknown subject had placed devices designed to steal account information on the credit union’s ATM machine. As a result, customer accounts were fraudulently accessed for a loss of over $65,000 according to a release issued last week by Warwick Police.

The Police Detective Division initiated a month-long investigation consisting of reviewing and analyzing video evidence and financial records to identify a suspect in the ATM skimming. As a result, a warrant was issued for Moises Morales Cano, a 30-year-old Hispanic male from Astoria, N.Y.

Members of the Warwick Police Department were able to deduce Cano’s pattern of activity. They believed that he intended to return to Rhode Island for further attempts at ATM skimming on Easter weekend. Detectives then set up a stakeout of a local hotel that their investigation revealed Cano had stayed at previously.

On April 4 at 11 a.m., Morales was taken into custody at the hotel without incident. He was transported to the Warwick Police Department, where he was held pending his arraignment on three felony counts of access to computer for fraudulent purposes. Also taken into custody was a second Hispanic male, Carlos Cineros, 52, also from New York. Cineros is believed to be Cano’s accomplice in the ATM skimming. Criminal charges relating to ATM skimming are pending against both subjects in other Rhode Island jurisdictions.

The investigation is ongoing, and it is believed that Cano and Cineros may be responsible for ATM skimming events in other locations along the east coast.
