Police step up seat belt enforcement as part of national drive

Warwick Police have stepped up the enforcement of the seat belt law as part of the national Click It or Ticket mobilization that runs through June 1.

“Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer vacation season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” Lieutenant Michael Gilbert said in a statement. “If you are not wearing your seat belt, you will be ticketed.”

According to new data released from the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatalities are up nationwide for the first time in five years. In 2012, 10,335 people who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing their seat belts. NHTSA data also details how more traffic vehicle deaths occur at night. In 2012, 61 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed during the nighttime hours of 6:00 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. were not wearing their seat belts.

“We are determined to help bring these numbers down,” said Gilbert. “There are too many people dying on the roads, and many of those deaths could have been prevented if people took the simple step of wearing their seat belt. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if people had buckled up. We will be handing out tickets year-round to those who still haven’t gotten the message.”

Lt. Gilbert....I have a mommy. She is the only adult who can ask me to wear a seat belt. Has anyone been killed by a body flying out of a car because it wasn't seat belted? No..no they haven't. Wearing/not wearing is a personal choice. We do know that police officers are required to wear their seat belt but they do not, according to national statistics. And when you are riding your police motorcycles....very dangerous devices with no seat belts.

This is nanny state, revenue producing non-sense.

What's a better way to remember all those who fought and died to protect "the land of the free" than enforcing a tax disguised as a public safety law that restricts freedom and personal choice?
