Possible bird sacrifice found at Conimicut Point

What appears to be multiple bird sacrifices on Conimicut Point near Old Mill Cove has been reported to Warwick Police and the Department of Environmental Management.

The site, discovered on May 25, consisted of four decapitated fowl including a chicken and a turkey, a dead fish, strewn dollar bills and a large amount of grain and beans on top of a bright blue cotton blanket.

One neighbor of the area, who wished to remain anonymous, said this is not the first weird occurrence on the beach at the corner of Old Mill Cove Boulevard and Spadina Avenue, but it is the most extreme.

“The pictures don’t do it justice,” she said. “It’s far different to go down to the beach and walk into something like this in person.”

Several times over the past year, neighbors have visited the beach and discovered “sizeable” boxes sometimes labeled with animal names filled with bird feces, specks of blood and feathers.

Around the holidays an elderly couple believed to be of “Caribbean descent” was discovered on the beach with a live pigeon, in what the couple categorized was a “blessing for the sick and recently passed,” promising they were not hurting the bird but sending it off with their prayers.

Although the instances may not be related, the anonymous neighbor feels as if they are.

The neighbor described the scene as religiously or culturally based, formally arranged with “purpose and meaning,” but did not believe the scene was a negative thing meant for malcontent.

“They did this ritual for reasons I don’t understand. I am not one to judge, but does it have to be on a public beach? People expecting to enjoy the beach don’t want to come across that and be forced to clean it up,” the neighbor said.

They said the beach is not remote or isolated but rather in the heart of suburbia, with numerous neighbors accessing it daily. The hope of the neighborhood is that these “odd” occurrences cease.

Warwick Police were called and cleaned up the scene.

The same neighbor had heard a rumor that a similar scene was discovered not too far away on Conimicut Point, discovered by DEM field representatives.

A Department of Environmental Management representative, Gail Mastrati, confirmed that a few individuals working in the field had discovered a similar scene, but deferred to the Warwick Police Department.
