Construction on Kent Hospital’s new addition is steadily progressing.
Joseph DiPietro, senior vice president and general counsel at Kent Hospital, said the project, which commenced in June of 2011, is to be completed by June of 2013.
“The project has four phases,” he explained.
The second floor of the building will house the ambulatory surgery center, which will move from its current location in Kent’s in-patient and out-patient operating rooms.
The first floor of the building will house medical offices. There will also be a connector to the current building (accompanied by lobby renovations) and the creation of a 10-bed short-stay unit.
The ambulatory unit, said DiPietro, will be completed soon after the first of the year, along with the connector to the hospital. The other projects will gradually be completed up until the June 2013 date.
The project’s price tag is approximately $30 million, a cost that’s being shared by Kent and the developer of the building, Seavest Healthcare Properties. DiPietro said that Kent sought out several developers to help with the financial burden of the expansion, and eventually settled on Seavest after a vetting process.
The building will be owned by Seavest and leased by Kent, who is responsible for outfitting the building for their needs. Kent’s funding comes from their capital budget, fed mainly by capital campaigns. Because Kent is leasing the building, they may not be the sole lessee. DiPietro said they are looking at other physicians groups and outpatient services to lease space on the first floor of the building. Some of the space will also be devoted to Affinity Physicians, an LLC connected with Kent.
DiPietro said the new addition will create new jobs, especially for those taking space on the first floor. DiPietro said it is too early to give an estimate on the number of new employees the space will make way for.
