National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is October 15, and AIDS Project RI will host a special walk-in testing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the day. The office is at 9 Pleasant Street in Providence (zip code for GPS users is 02906). Tests will be provided in Spanish as needed and test counselors will be on hand. More information is available at 831-5522 ext. 3842 or by email at takecharge@aidsprojectri.org. Testing for HIV, Hep C and syphilis is available. The tests are “fast, free, anonymous and rapid.”
In its 2015 Minority Health Facts Hispanics/Latinos information sheet, the Rhode Island Department reported that the HIV rate for Hispanics and Latinos is two times higher than that of the state as a whole and four times higher than the white population. In addition, the federal Centers for Disease Control reported that one in four Latino men in the U.S. who have sex with men will be HIV in their lifetime.
AIDS Project RI also offers walk-in testing weekly on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
