Protecting a pond & property values

To the Editor:

I live on Warwick Pond at 145 Edgehill Rd.

I am writing this letter to inform you that RIAC (Rhode Island Airport Corporation) and RIDEM (Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management) have entered into a consent agreement or a Memorandum of Agreement, which allows RIAC to continue the discharging of pollutants into Warwick Pond without a signed RIPDES permit in place.

I can only stress the importance of this action by telling you that if Warwick Pond becomes polluted our property values could drop 20 percent or more according to realtors I have spoken with.

In April of 2012, it will be 25 years since the last RIPDES Permit (Rhode Island Pollution Discharge Elimination System) was signed in 1987. This means that RIAC has discharged thousands and thousands of gallons of pollutants into Warwick Pond with little to no mandatory testing or monitoring. I believe RIAC has not signed a permit because they cannot meet the discharge thresholds that were deemed to be safe to the environment by DEM.

Please e-mail me at c.dercole@cox.net and I will send you a copy of the consent agreement with my thoughts on its effectiveness and what needs to be presented at the public hearing for this document.

It will take all of us together to protect our property values as well as preserving our way of life on the pond. This must be done for us, and future generations.

Protect and preserve.

Philip D’Ercole

TY Mr. D'Ercole for the update. Why would anybody be surprised? Maybe it is time the EPA brings a case against RIAC starting with an analysis of ALL chemicals and VOC's being leeched into Warwick Pond, the current levels, and those from 5 & 10 years ago? Perhaps URI and DEM can provide the past surveys. Can you say this is like a WR GRACE repeat? Where is the Sierra Club, Clean Water Action, Pave the Bay, and all the rest of the so called watchdogs? Must be nap time, just like the idiots in the State House.
