R&B legend Johnny Gill set for Mother’s Day performance at Cranston’s Park Theatre

He is known around the world as “The Voice” and a member of two legendary singing groups, New Edition and L.S.G.

On Sunday, May 11, Johnny Gill will bring his iconic R&B sound to the historic Park Theatre in Cranston for an intimate Mother’s Day performance – “My My My.” The show will also feature special guest jazz saxophonist Elan Trotman. Tickets are on sale now.

Since bursting onto the music scene at the age of 17 when his personally-recorded demo fell into the hands of Atlantic Records, leading to the release of his self-titled debut album, Gill has become one of the greatest and most successful R&B artists in history.

Following his debut album, Gill’s career reached uncharted levels of popularity when he was recruited to join the legendary group, New Edition.

The group’s first release with Gill, “Heart Break,” showcased a more mature sound, earning double-platinum status and peaking at #3 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart thanks to hits like “Can You Stand the Rain,” “If it isn’t Love,” and the Gill-led, “Boys To Men.”

Firmly established as one of R&B’s biggest stars, Gill returned to his solo career in 1990 with the release of his second self-titled album containing the mega-hits, “Rub You the Right Way,” and “My, My, My.” He would release two more records – “Provocative” and “Let’s Get the Mood Right” – before reuniting with New Edition in 1996 to record “Home Again,” a reunion album that welcomed back Bobby Brown.

In 1997, Gill collaborated with Keith Sweat and Gerald Levert to form the super group L.S.G., which yielded the multi-platinum debut album, “Levert.Sweat.Gill,” and the 2003 follow-up, “LSG2.”

After beginning to tour with New Edition band mates Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown in a new group named Heads of State, Gill signed a record deal with Notifi Records, re-launching his solo career with the highly-anticipated release of “Still Winning.” The massive buzz surrounding his latest project positioned Gill to once again change the landscape of music.

Featuring instant classics like the album’s debut single, “In the Mood,” and collaborations with Wyclef Jean, Trey Songz, and the track, “Been Loving You,” which reunites Gill with L.S.G. group mate Keith Sweat and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Eddie Levert, “Still Winning” climbed to #4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart.

Fresh off a successful “Road to the 30th Anniversary” tour with all six members of New Edition, Gill recently released “Just the Way You Are,” the third single from “Still Winning” – which keeps the vocal legend sounding as contemporary as Usher, Ne-Yo and all of today’s chart-topping R&B stars. The song’s mid-tempo vibe fits perfectly with all radio formats, yet reminds fans that Gill remains one of the best, most powerful vocalists in music.

Throughout his decorated career, Gill has also enjoyed a remarkable run as an actor, making more than 80 television and film appearances, including a cameo role on the television show “Family Matters,” and singing the timeless wedding song in Tyler Perry’s hit movie “Madea’s Family Reunion,” “You for Me.”

Gill has also collaborated with music icons such as Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, Babyface, jazz legend George Howard, and the late, great Rick James. He enters 2014 excited to put the finishing touches on a new album due out later this year, which will be released on Gill’s own label, J Skillz Records.

Johnny Gill with special guest Elan Trotman will take the stage of the Park Theatre to present “My My My” at 7:30 p.m. on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11. Tickets are $45, $55 and $65 and available by calling the Park Theatre Box Office at 467-7275 or online at www.ParkTheatreRI.com.

The Park Theatre is located at 848 Park Ave. in Cranston.

Free parking is available for all shows.
