On Saturday, May 9, Music Director Larry Rachleff and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra will fill the stage with singers for Carl Orff’s immortal Carmina Burana. Soloists Andriana Chuchman, Donald George, Hugh Russell, The Providence Singers and Rhode Island Children’s Chorus will join the orchestra to bring the curtain down on season 70. The program also features Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and a world premiere by the New England native composer Pierre Jalbert, commissioned in honor of the orchestra’s 70th anniversary. Tickets (starting at $15) are available at tickets.riphil.org, and the RIPO box office at 248-7000.

The Amica Rush Hour concert takes place Friday May 8 at 6:30 p.m.

“To conclude our anniversary season,” says Rachleff, “with Orff’s massive Carmina Burana. This work for nearly 200 singers, three soloists, 100 musicians, 63 minutes in length, is one of the most popular works for orchestra and chorus. We’ll be joined by the great Providence Singers, with whom we collaborate annually. Full of dances and marches, the piece draws on material from the past, Gregorian chant and masses, in addition to Orff’s own brand of orchestral and choral sound. Carmina Burana draws standing-room-only audiences because of its impact and power. We’ve commissioned American composer Pierre Jalbert to open the program with a work that, like Orff’s, will draw on mass and chant. looks back at music history as we celebrate our anniversary season. What a season it’s been!”
