R.I. Rays 13U take third at AAU Nationals

Posted

The Rhode Island Rays 13U team’s run at the AAU National Championships in Orlando, Fla., was derailed with a tough loss to Atlanta, Ga., in the national semifinals. The Rays regrouped to win their next game, which gave them a third place overall finish.

The Rays rolled to three wins in pool play action, which earned them a spot in the 16-team single elimination tournament. There, the Rays defeated Midway, Ga., 9-2 before beating Gainesville, Fla., 3-1 in the quarterfinals. Chad Mansolillo got the win in the first game, while the offense was led by two hits each from Steven Salisbury and Kyle Beaulieu. In the quarterfinal game, Salisbury pitched six strong innings and Justin Gist had a clutch two-out single in the second inning. After Gainesville tied the game in the fifth, Kyle Tweedy ripped a double to score Bobby Bordieri. Tweedy then came on in relief in the seventh and struck out the last batter with the bases loaded.

In the semis, the Rays led 2-1 thanks to a strong performance on the mound from Tweedy. But Atlanta took advantage of three Rays errors to take the lead, and the Rhode Island club couldn’t recover.

In the third-place game, the Rays got strong pitching from Zack Pipa and Casey Carreau en route to a 12-2 win over Lakeland, Fla. Beaulieu had three hits and four RBI while Warwick’s Andrew Almonte reached base three times and drove in three runs.

That's a lot of money to spend for coming in 3rd! I would like to think that spending 2k to play for the Rays would guarantee a 1st place finish!

You do realize that there are other teams right here in New England that charge a much higher fee to play for their program?

Not to mention that they play a 70 game schedule. and have multiple uniforms.

Uniforms, baseballs, field fees, umpires, etc.

    It all adds up.

    This isn't little league.

Sounds to me like you're bitter.

This was a NATIONAL tournament. Not clear if you can comprehend what that means but in layman's terms, that means across the COUNTRY.

Did your son not make one of their teams?

Did they kick your teams ass?

These are 13 year old kids, who are you to belittle their accomplishment?

And by the way, this team is now 53-1 and just won the New England Championship yesterday.

Based on you "money should get you a national championship" philosophy, what does that say about all professional sports teams?

I'm pretty damn sure there's no MLB team in the history of the game that's ever had a

    53-1 record at any point.

    Great logic. IDIOT.

Congrats to the RI Rays! A class act on and off the field.

And for the record, this team beat the living hell out of my sons team.

    Hey Getaclue,

Sounds to me like you must coach or be a friend of the team...running to their defense the way. I'm really not impressed with the Rays, or the coaching staff. From what I hear, the organization is going under slowly but surely!
