RI Resource Recovery posts tour schedule, adds online option

You’ve heard about R.I. Resource Recovery. You know it’s in Johnston. You know that’s where your trash and recycling go, but that’s about the extent of it. Until now.

From the comfort of your warm home, you can tour Resource Recovery and get an up-close look at what happens to your trash, recycling, paint cans, mattresses, washing machines and much more. All you need is a computer, smart phone or tablet, and access to the Internet.

When it’s convenient for you, go to YouTube, bypass the videos of cute kittens and monkeys who play the drums, and type in RIRRC. Settle in and prepare to be astounded.

Narrated by Krystal Noiseux, the recycling program manager at RIRRC, viewers can “tour” the recycling facility, composting operation, drop-off areas for special wastes and the Central Landfill all in about 30 minutes.

“Trash is such an out-of-sight, out-of-mind thing,” said Noiseux. “We want to bring it into sight and into mind, so we’re bringing it to your favorite device.

“Nothing replaces an actual visit,” said Noiseux. “But this is the next best thing to see what happens here and how seriously Resource Recovery takes its charge to protect the environment, provide affordable disposal for the state, and maximize the landfill space we do have.”

Noiseux explained that while many schools would like to take advantage of the free Resource Recovery tour to augment science and social studies curricula, tight budgets hinder student transportation to Johnston.

For anyone who would like to take a free, guided tour of the facilities, RIRRC just posted the 2014 tour schedule on its website, www.rirrc.org/maxbus-tours. Tour spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We already had a list of people waiting to be notified when the 2014 schedule is released, so we encourage everyone to sign up earlier rather than later,” said Noiseux. “We’ve added eight additional tour dates to the 2014 schedule to accommodate the demand.”

The 90-minute tours take visitors to the top of the Central Landfill (weather permitting), with stops at the Eco-Depot, the Small Vehicle Area for special recycling, the composting operation, and the Materials Recycling Facility. The 2014 dates are March 29; April 2, 12 and 26; May 3, 7 and 31; June 4 and 28; July 9, 19 and 26; Aug. 2, 6 and 23; Sept. 6, 10 and 27; Oct. 1 and 4; and Nov. 8.
