It doesn’t matter what season is it – or whether it’s an outdoor or indoor venue – Melanie Brunelle continues to rack up top honors and lead the Rhode Island College women’s track and field program.

Last Saturday, for example, Brunelle and the Anchorwomen were in Boston at the Reggie Lewis Center, for the prestigious UMass Boston Invitational.

Brunelle, who is a one-time product of the Pilgrim High School girls’ track and field program in Warwick, took home first place in the long jump with a leap of 5.27 meters before finishing second in the 400 meters at 59.50 in a meet that did not include team scoring.

Destinee Barrette, another Warwick native and RIC junior, captured first place in the weight throw at 14.45 meters and finished 20th in the shot put at 9.73 meters. Barrette is also a Pilgrim graduate.

East Greenwich’s Margaret McCaffrey finished in first place in the 1,000 meters at 3:14.75, while Eleni Grammas, a Cranston resident, posted a fifth-place effort in the 60-yard dash in 8.11 and she placed 16th in the 200 meters at 27.69. Her sister, sophomore Nicole Grammas, finished sixth in the 400 meters at 1:00.96.

Freshman Emma Landroche of Warwick notched a seventh-place finish in the 200 meters at 27:06, while Chevell Burgess of Providence took 10th place in the 200 meters at 27:33.

Smithfield’s Cassidy Bissitt, who is only a freshman, placed sixth in the 500 meters in 1:25.94 and Allison Lomas of Saunderstown was 11th in the 800 meters in 2:41.01.
