RW Park Zoo offering unique camp experience to kids of all ages

Registration for all 2015 ZooCamps at Roger Williams Park Zoo will be open on the zoo’s website, www.rwpzoo.org. ZooCamp is an environmental day camp that’s perfect for budding scientists, zoologists, explorers, artists and children who love animals.

ZooCamps run during Rhode Island’s public school vacations. In the winter, camp is available for children ages 4 to 10 from Feb. 17 to 20; spring camp for children ages 4 to 10 is available from April 20 to 24; and in the summer there are camps for children ages 4 to 10 from June 15 to August 21 and ages 11 to 13 from June 22 to August 21. Each ZooCamp is comprised of three different themed sessions tailored to a specific age range and offers days filled with crafts, hands-on and inquiry-driven activities, encounters with wild animal ambassadors and guided zoo tours.

Tadpole Academy is a half-day camp (morning session 8:30-11:30 a.m., afternoon session 12:30-3:30 p.m.) where 4- and 5-year-olds can have fun exploring the wild world through age-appropriate stories, crafts, games and zoo exploration in a small group of only 10 campers per session. Five-year-old campers may register for both a morning and afternoon session for a full day of Tadpole Academy.

Kids age 6 to 10 can enroll in Winter, Spring and Summer Adventures, a day camp that offers a variety of activities and adventures at the zoo that are just right for “big kids.” Each Adventures camp has a special theme for kids to learn something new about animals each time they visit.

During summer school vacation, there is a special ZooCamp specifically for older children ages 11 to 13 called Conservation Heroes. A week-long day camp at the zoo, Conservation Heroes empowers campers to become leaders in conservation through teambuilding and leadership activities, learning about other leaders in conservation, engagement in inquiry activities, games, program animal encounters, visits to animal exhibits and more.

ZooCamp fees vary depending on the particular camp program, but range from $140 to $270 for zoo members and $165 to $295 for non-members. Also available are after-care and pre-paid lunch options for an additional nominal fee. Each spring and summer ZooCamper will receive a free ZooCamp t-shirt and a “ZooCamp Access Pass” that is redeemable at one of many activities at the zoo, like a climb on the rock wall or admission to the butterfly exhibit, during a return zoo visit. They will also have the chance to feed goats and sheep at the Alex and Ani Farmyard exhibit.

The deadline to register is two weeks prior to the desired week of camp, but there are a limited number of spots available per week. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis, and registration can be easily completed on the zoo’s website. For more information and to register, visit www.rwpzoo.org and click on “ZooCamps” under the Education tab. To have a printed registration form mailed to you, call 785-3510 x352.
