The second section of the Barton Corner Bridge carrying Route I-95 over Route 2 was “driven” into place yesterday afternoon. The two sections of the bridge were built on either side of the highway and when completed, lowered onto giant low-bed tractors and wheeled into place. Moving the south section of the bridge started last Thursday night at 9 and was completed by Friday morning at 1. At top speed, the bridge section could travel at 6 miles per hour, but getting to the site was only a part of the challenge. As Sean Millette, supervisor for Mammoff, the moving company, explained, each of the 400-ton sections needs to be jostled into place. Here, the bridge section awaits its noon departure to the bridge site where workers prepare for its arrival.
