Veterans were treated to a reception followed by the raising of the flag and an assembly with Retired Rhode Island Adjutant Major General Reginald Centracchio as the featured speaker Tuesday morning at John Brown Francis School.
There was even more to the observance with 5th grader Josh Dean giving a solo performance of the National Anthem, students reading poems they had written and the school choir giving a performance.
Centracchio spoke of the First World War and how that was to be the “war to end all wars” but how that didn’t happen and fighting continues today. He said American soldiers have made it possible to enjoy the freedoms we enjoy and that hopefully students won’t find themselves in the position of defending this country later in their lives.
