Registration open for March 2 Torch Run Plunge

Posted

The seventh annual Special Olympics Torch Run Plunge will take place March 2 at Goddard Memorial State Park, with registration at 10 a.m. at the Carousel and the plunge starting at noon.

Last year, the Torch Run Plunge raised more than $30,000 for programming organized by Special Olympics of Rhode Island throughout the year. This year, there is the potential to raise even more with additional events on Saturday, March 1.

This year, Special Olympics of Rhode Island will be kicking off their Torch Run Plunge with a special plunge for high school students on Saturday at noon at Goddard Park.

Following the high school plunge, four brave individuals have volunteered to take part in a Super Plunge. Beginning at 1 p.m., the four will plunge into the water every hour on the hour (even through the night hours) until the large public plunge on Sunday at noon.

Between the Saturday and Sunday events, Special Olympics is anticipating over 300 plungers to participate.

All those participating in the plunge are required to raise a minimum donation of $50. In an attempt to make raising donations easier, the Special Olympics are suggesting participants start individual online fundraising websites through the online fundraising service, Firstgiving. According to press materials, this company provides a safe and easy way to collect donations online and raise awareness about the event and the athletes it benefits. To create a fundraising page, visit www.firstgiving.com/soriTR.

Those participating in the plunge are also asked to come dressed to impress; judging for best individual and group costumes will occur just prior to the plunge with winners announced during the Post-Plunge Party.

The Post-Plunge Party featuring food from Eddy’s BBQ, music from Exceptional Wedding DJs and raffle prizes will start after the plunge at approximately 12:30 at the Carousel at Goddard Park.

Non-plungers are invited to take part in the Post-Plunge Party for a $15 donation.

Those interested in pre-registering for the plunge but who do not want to use Firstgiving online fundraising must contact Tracy Garabedian by email at tracy@specialolympics.org by Monday, Feb. 24, or by calling the Special Olympics of Rhode Island at 349-4900 for more information.
