Reo powers Knights baseball to 13th win

Posted

Starting pitcher Rich Reo (Cranston) surrendered just one unearned run in his first start of the season Thursday afternoon in a 12-1 CCRI win over Southern New Hampshire University’s JV team. With the win, the Knights improved their record to 13-4 on the season.

Reo was in complete control from start to finish, shaking off one unearned run surrendered in the top of the first inning and settling in to go the distance in a five-inning game, shortened due to the mercy rule. Reo gave up four hits and walked just two, while striking out seven Penman batters.

After giving up the one run early, the Knights’ offense once again put on a strong showing, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control of the game. That continued into the later innings, when CCRI broke open a 6-1 game by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth to induce the mercy rule.

Jake Waldren (Phoenix, Ariz.) continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs, while Zach Wood (Griswold, Conn.) chipped in with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman Austin Barry (North Kingstown) got the start at third base and contributed with a double and a single, while stealing a base and scoring a run in three plate appearances. TJ Boyajian (Warwick) continued to set the table for the Knights in the leadoff spot, as he walked three times and scored three runs.

The Knights lost two games over the weekend to Meryhurt Northeast, ending their five-game winning streak.

Barros earns third-team All-American honors

The Lady Knights basketball team captured the spotlight even in the off-season, as captain Allexia Barros (New Bedford, Mass.) was named third team All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Barros ended her illustrious CCRI career with 988 career points, No. 2 on the CCRI all-time scoring list behind only Jahira Smith. In her sophomore season she was ranked No. 13 nationally in scoring with 20.4 points per game. In addition, she ended her career as the single season three-point leader with 92. Barros also holds the career three-point record with 156.

In her sophomore campaign, Barros was ranked No. 1 in the nation in three-pointers made per game, making 3.7 per contest while also being ranked No. 12 in three-point field goal percentage at 41.2%. Barros also broke the CCRI single-game three-point record as well with 11 threes versus Lincoln College of New England in the Lady Knights’ home opener, as she scored her career-high 35 points.

“I am beyond proud of Allexia,” said CCRI head coach Brittany Brown. “She has grown so much in the past two years. She worked hard and it’s well deserved. I am proud to say I coached her.”

Lady Knights split

Doubleheader with Dean

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Bulldogs of Dean College form Franklin, Mass. for a doubleheader Sunday.  The Lady Knights and Bulldogs split the doubleheader with CCRI winning the first 8-0 in six innings but losing the second game 6-4. With the split, the Lady Knights’ record is now 4-10 on the season and 3-1 in Region XXI play.

Game 1

Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich) got the start on the mound for CCRI and was dominant. She threw a six-inning shutout, allowing just five hits with one walk and four strikeouts to earn her second win of the year. She also helped her own cause with a hit in the sixth inning.

Offensively, CCRI got one run in the first as Taylor Butler (North Kingstown) doubled and was advanced to third on a sacrifice by Sam Archambeault (Harrisville). The Lady Knights benefited from some sloppy defense from Dean in the second, as they scored three runs on one hit and four errors to make the score 4-0.

The Lady Knights exploded for four more runs in the sixth inning. Jesse Ossian scored on a fielder’s choice from Jess Brosnahan (Warwick), followed by an RBI single from Amber Boucher (Warwick). Boucher and Rebecca Edwards (Attleboro, Mass.), running for Brosnahan, scored the winning runs on a two-run single from Butler to end the game.

Game 2

On the mound, Butler pitched well enough to win, but a few mental lapses in the field led to some runs. Butler threw seven strong innings allowing six runs – four earned – on 10 hits with two intentional walks.

CCRI scored a run in the first when Ashely Spear (Harrisville) plated captain Alex Place (East Greenwich) to tie  the score 1-1. CCRI tacked on another in the second when Boucher tripled in Liz Coburn – who had walked earlier – to make the score 2-1. Dean had a three-run third to re-take the lead.

CCRI scored another run in the fourth when Coburn doubled and scored on a single from Boucher. The final run for CCRI came in the seventh when Alexis Jendzejec (West Greenwich) singled home Butler, but that was as close as CCRI would get.

Leading the way offensively for CCRI on the day was Boucher, who reached and scored twice in the first game with a hit and had two hits in the second game, including a triple and two RBI. Boucher was helped by Butler, who was 2-for-3 with a double and a run in the first game and 3-for-4 with a run scored in the second game.
