Rhode Island College hosting conference on theatre and race

Mixed Magic Theatre, in partnership with Rhode Island College and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, is holding a conference on “The Role of the Theatre in the Conversation on Race in America” this Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sapinsley Hall at Rhode Island College.

With support from the Rhode Island Foundation, the forum includes theatre arts leaders from around Rhode Island, and will be moderated by Dr. James Taylor, co-chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Rode Island College.

Scheduled panelists include Jonathan Pitts-Wiley, Mixed Magic’s artistic director; Curt Columbus, Trinity Rep’s artistic director; Elmo Terry Morgan, Brown University’s Rites and Reason Theatre’s artistic director; actor, singer, director and playwright Rose Weaver; Ed Shea, 2nd Story Theatre’s artistic director; Benny Ambush, distinguished producer in residence at Emerson University; and Jackie Davis, actor, director and co-founder of the New Urban Theatre lab.

Renowned Dallas-based actor, director, playwright and composer Akin Babatunde will be a special guest.

The forum is free and open to the public.
