The RhodyBeat.com Celebrity Chef competition is long over, but the winner is still busy in the kitchen. Michael Latour of Johnston will make his YouTube debut this week in his very own cooking show.
Latour, who calls himself “Chef P-Lats,” entered his braised short rib ravioli into the online competition and won his own RhodyBeat cooking show as well as a gourmet food basket from Baker’s Baskets. Latour got his nickname from his daughter’s friends, who began calling him Papa Lats (short for Latour). When he started cooking, they tacked on the title of “Chef” and the name stuck.
Latour said he’s always loved to cook and credits his father, who was also a food lover, with his natural talent for making tasty meals.
For the past two years, Latour has been putting his culinary skills to work as the assistant kitchen manager for Dave’s Marketplace. Latour says he spends all day cooking at work, making gourmet dishes for the prepared foods section.
Before Latour was a chef, he worked in sanitation for 20 years. When his position was cut, Latour decided he would try making his life’s passion of cooking his career. He attended CCRI and studied culinary arts at Davies Career-Tech in Lincoln. Now he cooks at work and at home.
“My wife doesn’t cook, so she loves it,” he said. “She’s more of a baker. I don’t bake as much because you have to follow the recipe. In cooking, you don’t have to as much.”
Latour’s two children also relish their father’s culinary skills.
Latour said he draws inspiration for his recipes from Dave’s and from his favorite television chefs. His braised short rib ravioli is a combination of Dave’s braised short ribs and a Food Network ravioli recipe.
“I’ve always loved to cook,” he said. “I’ve been cooking my whole life.”
