Richard J. Whelan, D.D.S., age 89, of Spencer’s Grant Drive, East Greenwich, and formerly of Merrymount Drive, Warwick, a retired orthodontist, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, December 16, 2016, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the husband of the late M. Patrice (Kelly) Whelan.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary C. Tierney, and her husband, Scott, of East Greenwich; and five beloved grandsons: Ryan W. Tierney, Colin S. Tierney, Aidan R. Tierney, Owen P. Tierney and Keegan P. Tierney. He was the brother of the late Capt. David W. Whelan, USN, Shirley A. McManus, and John E. Whelan.

His funeral will be held today, Thursday, December 29, at 9 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, 350 Fair Street, Warwick. Burial with military honors will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
