Rinn named Northeast Conference Player of the Week

Posted

Former Moses Brown standout and Warwick native Robby Rinn’s sterling play this season received a just reward on Monday, as the current Bryant University junior first baseman was named the Northeast Conference’s player of the week.

Rinn received the honor after a weekend that saw him go 8-for-15 at the plate with six extra-base hits and seven runs driven in as the Bulldogs completed a four-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson and claimed sole possession of first place in the NEC.

The high point of the ex-Hawk’s weekend came in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Knights, which concluded in a 14-4 Bryant triumph.

After Fairleigh Dickinson pulled out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the third, Rinn rapped a double down the right field line that drove home Brandon Bingel and Jordan Mountford, erasing the deficit before scoring the go-ahead run himself later in the Bulldog half of the frame.

In his next appearance at the dish, with two out in the Bryant fourth, Rinn launched his team- and NEC-leading seventh home run of the season over the right field fence, which all but finished Fairleigh Dickinson starter Joe Borelli’s involvement in the contest.

For an encore, Rinn notched his second double of the game in the following inning, plating Bingel and Mountford after his bid for a second home run in as many at-bats was denied by the left field wall.

The season has been highly productive for Rinn, who was named the fifth-best pro prospect in the Northeast Conference by Baseball America prior to the season.

Having played in all but one game for Bryant to date, Rinn is batting at a .342 clip while compiling 18 doubles and 41 runs batted in, the latter two pacing the NEC.

Murphy tabbed Third Team All-NE-10

Hendricken graduate and current Assumption College baseball star Matt Murphy earned conference-wide recognition last week, being named third-team All-Northeast 10 for his exploits at the plate and on the hill for the Greyhounds.

The sophomore led Assumption this spring with a .341 batting average while also making nine appearances out of the bullpen, picking up three saves and striking out 20 in 11 innings of work.

Additionally, Murphy was the winning pitcher in Assumption’s 12-4 triumph over St. Anselm on April 2, pitching the final two frames and helping his cause with a pair of doubles and a run driven in as the Greyhounds posted nine runs in their half of the eighth.
