Robert J. Tingle, Sr.

Robert J. Tingle, Sr., 84, of Pine Glen Dr. died April 23, 2012 at Rhode Island Hospital. For fifty-seven years he was the beloved husband of Susanne (Conner) Tingle.

Born in Providence and raised in the Thornton section of Johnston, he was a son of the late William and Mary “Mae” (Cumming) Tingle. As a young man Bob was a volunteer firefighter and an athlete, who played baseball, basketball and softball in the Cranston YMCA Church League.

Bob, who was active in volunteer war effort activities, was one of the last draftees in World War II, entering the army in early 1946. During his tour he played baseball on the Regimental Team at Fort McCellan and in the Command League on Guam. Upon release from the Army, he reentered Johnson and Wales Business School and graduated as an accounting and business administration major in 1950. He also served in the RI National Guard from 1949 – 1954.

His business career began in banking working for RI Hospital Trust Bank for thirty years where he rose to Senior Vice President and the head of the Administration and Operations Divisions. He was later appointed to the position of Director of Public Affairs and Urban Development before retiring in 1983. He then embarked on a career in investments, retiring in 2005 as First Vice President of RBC Dain Rauscher (formerly Tucker Anthony, Inc.) where he and his son, Robert Jr. had formed the Tingle Investment Group and worked side by side for eight years.

Throughout his lifetime Bob devoted countless hours to numerous organizations including leadership roles with St. Elizabeth Home; St. Mary’s Home for Children; the Episcopal Diocese of RI; Episcopal Charities; St. Luke’s Church in East Greenwich; Keep Providence Beautiful; Volunteers in Action; Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America, the Providence Rotary Club; the United Way of RI; the Urban Education Center; the RI Advisory Council & National Board for Close-Up; the RI Urban Project, and Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce.

A long time trustee of Johnson and Wales University, he was a founder and past president of the University’s Alumni Association and in 1992, was awarded an honorary doctorate recognizing his many years of service. He was a board member and instructor at the RI Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and a past president of the Boston Chapter and national board member of the Bank Administration Institute.

In addition to his wife Susanne he is survived by his four sons ; Jeffrey and his wife Cynthia, Douglas, Stephen and his wife Heather and Robert Jr.; his four grandchildren Conner, Emily, Lyle and Spencer; and his nephew, Robert Tingle. He was the brother of the late William Tingle.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 10:00 AM in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Peirce Street, East Greenwich. The interment of his cremated remains in the St. Luke’s Church Garden Columbarium will be held privately. Kindly omit flowers.
