World War II veteran

Raymond L. “Red” McMahon, 85, of Cranston, passed away March 22, 2012 at the Providence VA Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth “Lizzy” (Masciarelli) McMahon.

Born in Salina, Pa., he was the son of the late William Roy and Roxie (Wilson) McMahon. As a young man, Red received the Bituminous Miner’s Certificate for Competency and Qualification and worked alongside his dad in the T.H. Davison and Son Coal Mine in Josephine, Pa.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and served as a private in the 777th Quartermaster Service Battalion and Company K 4th Regiment. Mr. McMahon was a rifleman and transportation specialist and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. He was extremely proud to have served his country. After receiving an honorably discharge, he relocated to Rhode Island.

Red was employed in the trucking industry for many years and retired in 1988 from the International Building Wrecking Company and soon after moved with his wife to Middleburg, Fla. After enjoying Florida’s warm climate and meeting and entertaining many new friends, Red and Lizzy returned home to Rhode Island in 2004.

He is survived by eight daughters, Patricia Farland, Susan McMahon Sepe, Karen Brown, Debra Barry, Elaine McMahon, Sheila Matarese, Robin McMahon and Stacey Santoro; seven sons, Raymond, William, Richard, Louis, Kevin, Kenneth and Scott McMahon; 21 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was the brother of Helen Finnegan of Johnstown, Pa., Jean Pavelchick, of Josephine, Pa., Betty Frantz of Ravenna, Ohio, Lelia Wilkinson of Akron, Ohio and the late Evelyn Kostro.

His funeral was held March 27 with a service in Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence. Burial with military honors was in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.
