Three Robertson School sixth graders won awards for essays entered in contests concerning patriotism. Shelby Brooks (left) won first place, a certificate and a $200 savings bond for her essay entered in the Tri-City Elks contest that addressed, “Why I’m proud to pledge to the American flag.” Anthony Vann (right), who won second place in the same contest, received a certificate and a $100 savings bond. Entered in a separate contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Courtney Cote won $25 and first place for an essay that had the entries imagine they were in the War of 1812, then create a character and describe their influence on the war. Cote was the only winner from the area.
