Rocky Hill literary and art review in spotlight at reception today

Posted

Rocky Hill School senior Michael Levy of Warwick has been working to produce the third issue of the school’s literary and art review, “The Hill,” which comes out this afternoon at a reception at 4:30 at the Flynn Academic Center.

Levy, founder and editor-in-chief of The Hill, is making a dream he conceived at boarding school a reality at Rocky Hill School.  According to Levy, The Hill serves, “to preserve student accomplishments and create a window into Rocky Hill School’s community.”

At the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, Levy created a common platform for Rocky Hill School student writers and artists to publish their work in a print edition of The Hill, produced biannually.  This year, he added an online component by creating The Hill’s website, tothehill.com, along with Twitter and Facebook presences.  There are even plans in the works to create an iPad application for an optimal online reading experience.

At today’s reception selected works will be read and refreshments will be served. This latest issue of The Hill is dedicated to Ian Cameron, Rocky Hill School Class of 2007, who passed away suddenly on June 29, 2013.

“The Hill is a fine example of student initiative here at Rocky Hill School,” said Rocky Hill School’s Head of Upper School, Doug Poskitt.  “We fully encourage and support students like Michael who have passions and drives that transcend traditional classroom activities.”

In 2013, Levy was the recipient of the Harvard University Prize Book Award, the Brown University Book Award, and the Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities & Social Sciences.

An avid student of history, Levy used his knowledge of Russian to personally invite Nikita Khrushchev’s son, Sergei, to speak to his Cold War class last April. Elected by Rocky Hill School faculty and his peers, Levy serves as a Senior Prefect this year, the highest leadership position given to a student in the upper school.  Levy is an accomplished lacrosse player, earning second team SENE All-League Honors in 2013.  He was also a member of the varsity soccer team for the last two years.
