Roses are red, violets are blue, you could be a winner too

VOTE FOR THE WINNER NOW!

Are you a poet and you didn’t know it?
The Warwick Beacon, Johnston Sun Rise and Cranston Herald are joining forces with the Hair Cuttery salon to give away a Valentine’s makeover to one lucky Facebook fan.
Those who are fans of the towns’ newspapers can enter now, and one lucky entrant will win a free makeover, just in time for the February holiday.
To enter, log onto our Facebook page and look for the post about the contest before the end of the day on 1/31. Comment on that post by completing the rhyme “Roses are red, violets are blue.” The top five best entries will be chosen at the end of January. From there, friends and family can vote for the winner on RhodyBeat.com. The author of the best entry will be announced the week before Valentine’s Day.
Those who have no previous writing experience are encouraged to enter. Deborah Lilli, a professor in the English Department at CCRI who teaches poetry and creative writing, offered these helpful tips to first time poets:
- Write about what you know. “Be truthful and honest,” she said.
- Decide who your audience is. “Is it specific, or general?”
- Decide what your purpose is. “Besides winning a makeover, are you going to be straight and romantic or humorous,” she said.
- Do a first draft, then revise and embellish. “You can always ‘pretty-up’ the language.”
Entries in the competition don’t have to be lengthy and can be as short as a few words.
“Look up roses, violets and the colors red and blue,” said Lilli. She said the images would give writers a spark of inspiration.
For those who want to do some research on great romantic poetry, Lilli recommends reading Rumi, Shakespeare, Danté, Barrett Browning and even Poe. She also said the Marlowe poem, “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love,” is good fodder for Valentine’s poetry.
Be it simple, romantic, humorous or zany, all entries are welcome.
