Ramos leads Pats past Knights

Freshman Aaron Ramos continued his electric season with one goal and two assists to lead the Pilgrim boys’ soccer team over Providence Country Day on Friday afternoon, 4-1.

Fellow frosh Danny Peixinho kicked off the scoring after a through ball found him in front of the net in the 12th minute.

Evan O’Connor buzzed past the defense just before halftime to tack on another, cutting the left edge to give Pilgrim the eventual clincher. Ramos notched his only tally of the game a minute out of halftime, giving the Pats a 3-0 advantage.

The Knights would break through to eliminate the possibility of a shutout, but Ethan Toole, the fourth different Pats scorer on the day, put the game out of reach.

The victory sent Pilgrim to 7-2-3, good for fourth place in Division III. The Pats are seven points out of first place with three games to go. Third-place Davies, which Pilgrim defeated earlier this season, is just four points ahead in the No. 3 spot.

Next up for the Pats is a road tilt with Exeter/West Greenwich (6-3-2) on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Scarlet Knights are positioned only four points behind Pilgrim in the standings.

Hawks down Purple

Robert Merlino’s goal was enough for Hendricken as it got back to its winning ways on Friday, defeating Classical on the road, 1-0.

Hendricken moved in front of Classical on the table as a result, sitting one point ahead in fourth place at 21 points. The next squad to leapfrog would be Barrington, which Hendricken beat, 4-1, earlier this year.

The Hawks will have to keep finding ways to eke out points as another difficult matchup loomed against South Kingstown on Monday at 6 p.m. The Rebels were stalking Hendricken in the standings, sitting just two points behind. Results from that matchup were unavailable at press time.

Pats drop close road contest to Chargers

The Pilgrim field hockey team could play a significant spoiler role if it makes the playoffs.

The Pats kept Chariho (12-2-0) on the ropes for their entire matchup on Friday afternoon. Brittany Boyd scored in the second half to force overtime, but Tabitha King led the Chargers to victory with her overtime goal.

Goalkeeper Lindsey Fontes stopped nine shots for Pilgrim.

The Pats (6-7-0) faced off with crosstown rival Toll Gate (3-8-0) on Monday afternoon, but results were unavailable at press time. Pilgrim is positioned comfortably ahead of Rocky Hill for third place in Division II-South.
