Hawks, Pats to play for championships

The Hendricken and Pilgrim hockey teams will take to the ice at Brown University’s Meehan Auditorium this weekend to battle for championships.

The top two teams in Division I and bitter rivals, La Salle and Hendricken, will meet with the state championship on the line.

Hendricken powered its way into the title series after sweeping No. 4 Mount St. Charles behind 12 goals over a two-game span.

La Salle posted a sweep of its own, as it needed just two games to oust No. 3 Smithfield.

Hendricken will lean on its top line once again this series after the trio of Pat Creamer, Michael DiMascolo and Andrew Hopgood was simply too big and fast for Mount to handle. That top line will be given the task of slowing down La Salle’s top scoring threats – Evan McGreen (37 points) and Drew Edwards (31 points) – who were both in the top 10 in the division in scoring during the regular season.

Justin Spencer has also been tough to beat in net for La Salle this season, posting a save percentage of .929 and a goals against average of 1.78.

Fans should be in store for a close battle after the rivals split their season series with a win apiece and a tie.

Game 1 at Brown will be played on Friday at 8 p.m., and the puck will drop for Game 2 on Saturday at 7 p.m.

If a Game 3 is needed, it will be played on Monday evening.

Pats and Huskies to play for title

Goals shouldn’t be hard to come by when Pilgrim and Mount Hope meet for the Division III crown.

The Pats (124 goals) and Huskies (93 goals) were the top two offensive teams in the division during the regular season, combining for 217 goals over 36 games.

Furthermore, this series will feature seven of the top nine scorers in D-III.

The Pats have the top scorer in Ty Morgan (58 points), but the Huskies’ Cam Rancourt (55) and Jack Dolan (52) weren’t far behind in second and third, respectively. Mount Hope junior Ryan Cordeiro was also sixth in the division with 44 points.

In terms of the season series, Pilgrim outscored Mount Hope, 21-12, over four games to secure victories in all four matchups.

Game 1 between the Pats and Huskies will be played at 2 p.m. at Brown on Saturday. A date and time for Game 2 has yet to be determined.

Hawks, Pats set for state tournament

The Hendricken and Pilgrim boys’ basketball teams earned entries into the state tournament, which will begin this evening.

The Hawks were awarded the top overall seed after winning the Division I title, and they’ll draw No. 16 South Kingstown at North Kingstown High School at 5:30 p.m. tonight.

Pilgrim, on the other hand, will be the No. 14 seed after a solid season in D-II. It will play division foe Shea, which is the No. 3 seed, at Roger Williams University at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

The winners of the Round of 16 games will play in the Elite 8 at Brown University’s Pizzitola Center on Sunday.
