Teaming up to fight ALS

An estimated 600 people turned out Sunday for the 15th annual ALS Association Rhode Island Chapter walk at Confreda Sports Complex. The event was second only in turnout to 2014, the “year of the Ice Bucket Challenge” when that craze raised more than $100 million nationwide. The goal of the Rhode Island Walk was $100,000, which was raised with the support of hundreds plus several sponsors, including United Health Care, Nortek, Rhode Island AFL-CIO, Scotia Bank and Stonewall Solutions Technology. A total of 57 teams whose members either walked in honor of someone with ALS or in memory of someone who died participated in the event. The local chapter assists more than 70 families who have members suffering from the disease, providing at no cost respite care, health care services, clinics and the loan of equipment. Those diagnosed with ALS have a life expectancy of two to five years. (Warwick Beacon photos by John Howell)
