Leading the way to a revitalized Apponaug

After 10 years of considering the options, stalled plans because of limitations set by being in a historic district and fundraising, work has started on restoring what affectionately is known as “The Victorian Lady.” Home to the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, the building across from City Hall dates back to the mid-1800s. The smaller building next to it, which is also part of the property, was once a blacksmith shop and then the office of the City Clerk. Both buildings are being worked on and when completed will be shades of brown and green, “earthy colors,” says chamber president and CEO Lauren Slocum. The first of the work that started in earnest this week is the repair and restoration of gutters and downspouts that is being followed by the replacement of 11 windows and three new windows that had been removed by various tenants. Interior renovations are part of the overall plan projected to cost $250,000. Slocum praised community support of the project, saying businesses and individuals have stepped forward to support of the effort. She said about $50,000 still needs to be raised. Vinyl siding will ensure an enduring look to the buildings, which, Slocum points out, will be restored in tandem with completion of the Apponaug circulator project this year. (Warwick Beacon photo)
