Tia Browning of Narragansett, whose mother died in 2015 and is now with a family friend, is the recipient of a $1,000 Catherine T. Murray Memorial Scholarship. Legally blind, Tia is enrolled at Rhode Island College, where she aims to attain a degree in special education followed by a master’s degree in assistive technology. She said her interest in working in assistive technology stems from being a counselor at a camp for blind children and her career goal is to help students with disabilities. Pictured with Tia is Lorna Ricci, executive director of the Ocean State Council for Independent Living that administers the scholarships named for Murray who served on the agency board and was passionate about its mission to help people with disabilities.
