Capital City Construction has completed the disassembly of the geodesic dome erected in 1962 on Airport Road. Al DeRobbio, who runs the company, said the work “started at the top and we wound our way down in circles” with the removal of more than 400 aluminum panels. The job took 16 days and consumed more than 600 grinding discs used to cut “rivnuts,” a combination rivet and nut, connecting the panels. The panels are now being stored in Warren as Robert Corio, who funded the project, seeks a home to resurrect the unique structure. Under the terms of Corio’s agreement with the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, the dome will be offered to municipalities and is to be displayed publicly.
