Dash to opening day

A visit to Pilgrim High School on Tuesday, less than 24 hours before the school opened for the academic year, found crews putting finishing touches to renovations that have taken the summer to complete. While there remained a few projects such as the installation of additional lockers and painting of corridors, the school opened for the freshman class on schedule yesterday. The full student body returns today. Painting one of the corridors is Rich Tweedie of Napco. Alex Palmisciano of Local 94 installs carpeting in the auditorium and a crew works on installing lockers brought over from Aldrich Junior High, which is now closed. Checking out the gym and its new floor is school Principal Gerry Habershaw. (Warwick Beacon photos)

Thanks to the enormous effort of dozens of contractors it looks like the renovations are going to be finished in time (almost). Congratulations to Superintendent Thornton and his hard working staff.

Any word about having teachers to teach our children?

Last I heard they were willing to sit and negotiate and the School Committee was not. In the Court of Public Opinion, the teachers win and they win big. Now that school is open, shouldn't we concentrate on having teachers? Or do we keep letting them leave for school systems that will actually give them an employment contract?

    Please solve this growing problem.

Everyone enjoy the Labor Day Weekend

The prior comment was made by a political candidate who believes that voters in Warwick will not inform themselves of the status of contract negotiations between the teachers union and school committee.

School officials and union leaders have been in arbitration and litigation to resolve the impasse over a new teachers contract, including a recent court ruling against the union regarding layoffs and an arbitration hearing that ended after union leadership demanded a 30-percent raise over three years. The school superintendent stated that the school committee seeks a resolution to contract negotiations but feels that the union leadership is not acting in good faith to resolve the issue.

This candidate has also regularly cited the "court of public opinion" for support of his claim that teachers are "winning" the ongoing dispute over a new contract, and yet has not produced evidence of a poll, survey, or other independently verifiable information that may support this statement.

Please join the rest of us in Warwick who know that contracts are negotiated only when two parties agree to act in good faith, and who refuse to accept this candidate's false statements.

    CrickeeRaven, you are getting worse!

Now you are lying about me AND THE READER, in the same comment.

I do not believe that "voters in Warwick will not inform themselves", I just want to agree with them if that is OK with you, whoever you are. And "the Court of Public Opinion" as referenced in my many comments is an actual poll that I have taken in my campaigning. I have personally spoken to hundreds of voters about the teachers contract issue, and I hear more every day. Every single one of them side with the teachers! I have not met one, NOT ONE, yet that agrees with you. That is my poll which you have every right to ignore and disregard if you like. Since you refuse to give the reader your honest name, I am sure the readers will give your statements no credibility and they can judge mine any way they want. I am just reporting my honest findings. What the reader feels about them is entirely up to them. Your comments sure tell them a lot about you and your identity. Several readers have called me with information about you. Several are "sure" they know who you are. Care to come clean? It would be an honest way to continue. In the meantime if anyone else would like to give me information about the Cricket-Raven please call me at 338-9900. The sooner we expose this dishonest person the faster he/she will have to be responsible for his/her comments just like the rest of us are.

Enjoy your labor Day Weekend everyone!

The prior comment is by a political candidate who has refused to answer direct questions about the falsehood of many of his statements, and is another attempt to enforce conditions for its use that the management and ownership of this site do not require.

He also cites a poll which he has not published, nor shared any of its information publicly except for his own claims of its contents. He has further asserted that he has been informed of the identity of a commenter on this site by as-yet unnamed people, indicating that he is engaging in bullying and intimidation for the purpose of stopping a user from commenting on this site.

Please join me and the thousands of voters in Warwick who will not stand for this kind of behavior, and who will reject this candidate on Nov. 8.
