John Brown Francis School Principal David Cluff challenged each of the school’s classes to a food drive with the promise that he would take a pie in the face for each class that collected 60 cans. Cluff ended up getting 12 pies, and not those little Table Top pies either. Pies consisting of a mix of shaving cream and whipped cream topped with cherries, of course, were especially made up for the occasion. In fact, the third grade class of Sandra Tavitian delivered two facial pies, but not before writing a persuasive letter that they’d earned that right by collecting 120 cans. Cluff called the event “ten minutes of good circus honor” that left him coated with cream. He credited school nurse Alison Coccoli with preparing him for the next pie and having the foresight to provide him with safety glasses. As for the food drive, 967 cans were collected, making it the largest food drive in recent memory, according to custodian Wayne Anderson. Anderson packed up the donations Monday for delivery to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. (Submitted photos)
