SIDS volunteers were difference maker

To the Editor:

The 21st Narragansett Spring Scramble for SIDS was held at North Kingstown Golf Course on a rainy, windy May 24. We still had 106 paid golfers. I think you would have to look long and deep to find a better bunch. These people are the real heart of the success of this tournament. Many thanks.

We had a showing of volunteers from the R.I. Alliance for SIDS who did the duties at holes #10 and #18 and for the putting contest. The money they raised was the difference of success: Mary and Tom Foley, Mary and Frank D’Ercole, and Denise – who also made three beautiful-themed baskets for the raffle!

Also helping along the way: Heidi, Gator, Mike Constantine, Bill Ryan; Bill, Nick and Lori Hickey; Capt. Pete Wakeman, Sue and Kiana, Grand-champ Larry Champayne, and Bob Mitchell from Champlin’s. Also a special thanks to the team from Town Dock and Noah Clark for their early donation and Chris Gorham. Our hole sponsors and donators: Bon Vue Inn, Champlin’s Seafood Dock, Durkin Cottage Realty, O’Neil’s Package Store, Peg and Chris Gorham, Carolyn and Joe Tedino, Paul McAuley and Family, Rep. Don Lally, Gilligan’s Pub, the Oates Family, the Sweeney Family, Sweeney’s Wine and Spirits, Baskets by Denise, Tom Spargo, Pelly’s 19th Hole North Kingstown Golf Course, Joe McClanaghan, Lenny at Come Screen With Me, Sign Shop RI, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Elisha. Many thanks to Capt. Peter Wakeman, Mark Bolster, Brian Holland, The Fogarty Family, Phil Fogarty, the Coast Guard House, and Durkin Cottage Realty for responding first.

The men’s longest drives – #4 Lynda Faleone, #7 Heidi G, #11 Lynda Falcone. The closest to the pins – #3 Thom Moss, #8 Phil Fogarty and #14 Paul Gunning. #10 in the circle 50/50 raffle and #18 on the green 60/50 raffle both donated back to charity – thank you both. The Putting Contest was won by Tom Steinmeyer, who also returned his winnings – thank you.

The men’s division score of –10 was hit by Team Spargo with Tom Spargo, Luke Whaley, Paul Gunning, and Pat O’Brien. The Mixed Division was won by Samantha Morrell, Mike Gunning, George McAuliff, and Brian Meehan. They took home the lobsters at –9. A good time was had by all.

Anybody that missed this year, make sure to call Joe at 737-0995 to ensure a spot in 2014. First call get to play, we expect a full house next year. Greg, Tim and Elisha did a great job with the meal and chef Larry Champayne organizing at Pelly’s 19th Hole. John and his staff did a great job setting the course for the games.

Next year’s date is May 23, 2014. Please call early, 737-0995 att. Joe. Thanks to all. See you next year. As we have since his passing, a donation will be made to SIDS-MIS in the memory of Bob Sweeney. Special thanks and best of luck to the Coast Guard House, always our first responder.
