1960s
Pilgrim 5, Vets 2
Warwick Vets rolls to a 33-0 victory in 1963, the first year of the series, but Pilgrim comes back with four straight shutout wins. Vets gets back on track with a close one-point win in 1968, still the smallest margin of victory for the ’Canes in the series. Pilgrim finishes the decade with a 19-6 win in 1969.
1970s
Pilgrim 5, Vets 5
The most even decade in series history begins with a 16-8 Pilgrim victory but Vets then wins four close games in a row. The second half of the decade belongs to Pilgrim, with the Patriots winning in 1975 on their way to the state title and beginning a string of four wins in five years. Vets’ lone victory in the stretch is a 23-6 win in 1973.
1980s
Vets 6, Pilgrim 3, 1 Tie
The 80s open with a stunner — a 0-0 tie, the first and still the only draw in history. Neither team gets too hot after that. Pilgrim wins in 1981, Vets takes two straight, Pilgrim wins in 1984 before the ’Canes take two more. The Pats stop that stretch with their most lopsided win in series history, 41-6 in 1987, but Vets wins the next two.
1990s
Vets 7, Pilgrim 3
The 1990s usher in one of the best stretches of statewide success for Warwick schools in many years, with Vets winning a title in 1994 and Pilgrim finishing as a runner-up in ‘92 and ‘95. Vets owns the Thanksgiving series, winning seven of 10. But Pilgrim spoils Turkey Day in Vets’ ‘94 title season and salvages two more victories.
2000s
Vets 6, Pilgrim 4
Building on three straight wins, Vets adds three more to start the new milennium. Each team wins two in a row before Pilgrim upsets a talented Vets team in 2007. The next year, Vets gets revenge thanks to six touchdown passes by record-setting quarterback Bob Bentsen. Pilgrim wins the next two to end the decade.
2010s
Vets 2, Pilgrim 1
The Pats win 20-13 to begin the decade and are favored to make it two in a row. Instead, a Vets team that went 1-6 on the heels of two straight winless seasons shocks a strong PIlgrim team with a 21-14 win. The victory sparks a 2012 turnaround for the ’Canes, who miss out on the playoffs but roll over Pilgrim 40-0 in the 50th meeting.
