The Rhode Island Association for Justice handed out 140 helmets to Sherman School students Monday as part of its ongoing program to promote safety for kids when riding bikes or using scooters, skateboards or states. Henry Monti of the association said the members fund the program and that 865 helmets will be given out this year. According to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Trauma Registry, last year 83 percent of children between the ages of three and 18 admitted with injuries from a bicycle-related accident were not wearing helmets even though Rhode Island law requires children 15 and younger to wear them. Students in schools in Cumberland, Providence and North Providence will be getting helmets this year, the 14th year of the program. As Sherman School is within the district of Senator Michael McCaffrey, and he is an association member, McCaffrey addressed the students on the importance of wearing helmets.
