Sandwich Junction: Take a detour for the kind of fresh food only a mother makes

Posted

They just don't make places like this anymore. In this rushed world of drive-through windows and fast-food restaurants, places like the Sandwich Junction are just plain old hard to find these days. With the home-cooked, fresh-from-the-market kind of feel about it, this cozy sandwich "joint" is tucked into an unexpected corner of Warwick - right off the train tracks. Located at the end of a dead end street, but marked by a big familiar sign, you may have to venture a bit off the beaten trail to find Sandwich Junction on 86 Kilvert Street, but it is worth the detour.

Sandwich Junction is a family-owned restaurant that has been serving up fresh made lunch fare for over 36 years. Alex Longiaru first opened the place in 1977, and in 1990 his daughter Kathy and her husband Craig Ruginski took over the business. Once the home of the old Hillsgrove Post Office, this establishment is an inviting little restaurant with a big personality that hearkens back to the day when everything was fresh and straight from the farm. Lined with comfortable seating booths and decked with train memorabilia, you feel as though you have stepped back to that time as soon as you enter.

All the hot and cold sandwiches selections reference the legacy of the train junction stop. Made with the freshest of ingredients and the tender loving care of your grandmother, you will find popular favorites such as the "Caboose", a hot sandwich made with eggplant, meatballs and provolone. The "Freight Car Combo" is a satisfying choice of salami, ham, pepperoni, provolone, tomato, pickle, and onion, all stuffed into a crusty roll.

Every day, a long list of specials is posted - specials like a Maple Turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato and maple mayo served on a wheat wrap, or the Junction Cuban sandwich of Cuban-style pork and melted Swiss, with a dollop of chipotle mayo for that extra punch of flavor. Most of these offerings are under $8.00, to say nothing of the list of tasty .99 side orders and items from the grill and fryer, all under $7.50. You can also impress everyone at the family cookout by ordering a macaroni salad, a meat/cheese platter or a real people-pleaser - the 5-foot Party Hero (one week's notice please!)

Finally, just when you thought it couldn't get any better, sample one of their sweet home-baked desserts. "Blueberry dreams", fudgie chocolate brownies, or a "whoppie pie" are just a few of these delights.

Sandwich Junction is located at the end of Kilvert Street, off Post Road between Sovereign Bank and Wendy's, opposite the airport. Hours are Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm (sorry, they are closed Saturdays and Sundays). Cash only please. Don't forget to "like" them on facebook! To place an order, call 738-0559.
