Sarah Jarosz joins ‘Prairie Home Companion’ at PPAC

When Garrison Keillor brings his “Prairie Home Companion-America the Beautiful” show to the Providence Performing Arts Center this Friday, August 7 at 8 p.m., he’ll be joined by one of the hottest singer/songwriters in the country.

Sarah Jarosz, folk/roots/

Americana sensation, re-corded her first album before she even graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation.

The Texas-born singer now lives in New York City, but spends most of her time traveling the country with Keillor and also with two popular bluegrass artists.

Jarosz is proficient on guitar, banjo and mandolin and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. Still in her early twenties, she has been featured on “Austin City Limits,” “Conan” and “The Late, Late Show,” in addition to Keillor’s radio show.

She spoke to me from her hotel in Minneapolis, where the show is sold out.

“We are literally traveling from coast to coast, and the reception has been terrific. I’m looking forward to coming to Providence,” she said.

Although Sarah enjoys playing bluegrass in her other tour, she considers herself a folk singer. Her mentors have been Tim O’Brien and the musicians from Nickel Creek.

“I enjoy playing and writing a broad range of music,” she said. “We’ve done shows in auditoriums and also at many outdoor festivals. There’s a certain energy playing to outdoor audiences, but I also enjoy the intimacy of playing indoors with fewer distractions.”

Sarah said that Friday night’s show has “a little bit of everything.”

“We do sketches, have an incredible sound effects man, the Raunchy Rhubarb Band, a fabulous fiddler and guitar player and, of course, news from Lake Wobegun.”

There will also be some classics from the 41-year-old radio show.

Tickets are still available for the two and a half hour show by calling the Providence Performing Arts Center by calling 421-5000.
