One thing the Sherman Elementary School family believes is that giving back to the community is an important part of education. In fact, the elementary school participates in at least one fundraiser or event every month. Saturday will be no exception.

This Saturday, the PTO is holding “Sherman Shaves for Hasbro.” For a $5 donation, those who are brave enough can have their heads shaved by stylists from the Warwick Hair Cuttery at 615 Greenwich Avenue with the proceeds going to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Although the PTO has not yet decided how the proceeds will be used, PTO Vice President Anne Goldman said they are happy to be raising money for a good cause.

Goldman said she was inspired by others raising money for the Boston Children’s Hospital in an upcoming event at Gillette Stadium.

“I saw a commercial for Buzz-Off for Boston and thought it would be nice to do something local and donate to Hasbro,” she said.

Goldman, who recently had a family member pass away from cancer, wants to do something to help, especially because the patients at Hasbro are all children.

“I don’t think people realize how important it is to have a children’s hospital,” she said.

She related how appreciative she has been of the staff in past experiences there, noting how they are caring toward not only the children, but the parents as well.

PTO President Gail Erban spoke of the support they have received for multiple PTO events throughout the years.

“We have been very lucky,” she said, “the parents and the students have been very generous whenever we need anything. They’re very supportive.”

When asked about how the children have reacted to the news of people willingly shaving their heads, Erban gave a laugh.

“My son is going to buzz his hair, so he’s very excited about it,” she said.

But what people attending are really excited about is the mystery PTO mom shaving her head. Should they make $500 by 3 p.m., one fearless mother will shave her entire head for the hospital.

“People are in complete shock that a mom is going to do it,” Goldman said. “Even Mrs. Paton, the principal, couldn’t believe it. But we haven’t let a word out about who it is!”

Principal Michelle Paton stressed that Sherman has a dedication to helping out in Warwick, and even farther than that.

“We always have something going on,” Paton said. “We’re a Feinstein school, so we always like to have something running. It’s a commitment to service. We try to work with the fact that it’s good to give back to the community and that school is part of the community. It’s good for the kids to know that they’re a part of the world.”

Both Sherman students and teachers get involved in activities throughout the year. Physical education teacher Kim Sullivan participates in Jump Rope for Heart, and school nurse Donna Rainone walks for juvenile diabetes. During the holidays, fifth graders ran a toy drive for Toys for Tots, and the kindergarten children and third graders went to the Cornerstone Nursing Home on Warwick Avenue to give out handmade scarves and sing Christmas carols. Sherman has even crossed the ocean to donate $1,200 to Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by Taliban officials for going to school.

“Sherman Shaves for Hasbro” will be held in front of Sherman Elementary, rain or shine, from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Sherman PTO is also providing the opportunity to bring box tops to the fundraiser. They plan on donating the box top proceeds to victims of the Oklahoma tornado.
